Why were you interested in a career in city management?
I was introduced the city management as high schooler in Mustang, OK. As a planning intern in Maryland Heights, MO, I was able to observe the City Administrator in his daily tasks, and his interactions with the various departments and public. Then as a planner with NCTCOG, I got to interact with most of the city managers in the Dallas/Fort Worth region. City Managers are problem solvers working to improve their communities.
What degrees do you have and from which university?
BS Environmental Design from the University of Oklahoma, Masters in Regional and City Planning from the University of Oklahoma, and Masters in Public Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington.
How has membership in CMAO helped you in your career?
CMAO has allowed me to network with City Managers and other professionals from across the state. The knowledge and insight I have received from these seasoned and experienced individuals is priceless, and had helped me as I work to improve my community.
What advice do you have for a student who is interested in pursuing a career in city government?
Get to know other City Managers. Also, take internships and part-time jobs with various cities. There are many creative approaches to solving the complex challenges that every community will face. I also believe my background in urban planning has been a significant enhancement for my career experience.
